Press Record and start talking

Your voice is recorded and stored on this device. It is never uploaded. Audio to Text takes over locally when you send a recording there (limit 30 minutes).

Why use this online voice recorder

See your voice as you record

A live waveform shows the microphone picking you up, so you know it is working before you have said anything worth keeping.

Recordings stay on your device

Nothing is uploaded. Recordings are saved in your browser, so they are still there when you come back, until you delete them.

One click to a transcript

Send any recording to Audio to Text and it opens ready to transcribe, with no downloading and re-uploading in between.

Download it your way

Keep the small original file, or convert it to a WAV that any editor opens.

How to record your voice online

  1. Click Record and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
  2. Talk normally and watch the waveform move. Use Pause and Resume if you need a break.
  3. Click Stop and save. The recording appears in your list, saved in this browser.
  4. Press play to hear it. Click the name to rename it.
  5. Download it as its original file or as a WAV, or click Send to Audio to Text to get a transcript.

Common voice recorder problems and fixes

  • The browser never asked for microphone access: you may have blocked it earlier. Click the padlock next to the address bar, set Microphone to Allow, and reload the page.
  • The waveform is flat: the wrong microphone may be selected. Use the Microphone menu next to the buttons if it appears, and check the input device in your system sound settings. The mic test shows a level meter for the same check.
  • "Microphone is in use": another app or tab has it. Close Zoom, Teams or another browser tab using the mic and try again.
  • The recording is very quiet or very loud: raise or lower the input level in your system sound settings and stay about 30 cm from the mic. Loud peaks that touch the top of the waveform are clipping.
  • My recordings disappeared: they live in this browser only. Clearing site data, a private window, or a different browser or device will not show them. Download what you need to keep.
  • The WAV file is much larger: WAV is uncompressed. Keep the original file if size matters.
  • The recording stopped when I switched apps: on phones a browser may pause a recording when the screen locks or another app takes over. Keep the page in front while you record.
  • There is a hiss or hum in the background: run the recording through the audio noise remover.

A voice recording is often the start of something else. Turn it into text with audio to text, clean up background noise with the audio noise remover, or make timed captions for a video with the subtitle generator. Check your microphone first with the mic test. For a transcription engine you can run yourself, see the Meetrix Transcribe Engine, or browse all Meetrix features.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this online voice recorder free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many recordings you make. Each recording can be up to one hour long.

Is my voice uploaded anywhere?

No. Your voice is recorded by your browser and stored on your own device. It is never sent to Meetrix or anyone else. It only leaves the page if you download it yourself, or click Send to Audio to Text, which opens another page on this site and hands the recording over through your browser without any upload.

Where are my recordings saved, and for how long?

In your browser, on this device, using the same kind of storage web apps use for offline data. They stay until you delete them or clear this site's data. Private or incognito windows do not keep them, and a different browser or device will not see them, so download anything you need to keep.

How do I record my voice on a computer?

Open this page, click Record and allow microphone access. Talk, then click Stop and save. You need a microphone, either built into the laptop or a USB or headset mic, and a browser such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.

What file format does it record in?

Your browser chooses: WebM with Opus audio in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, or MP4 with AAC in Safari. You can download that original file or convert it to an uncompressed WAV with one click. There is no MP3 option.

How long can I record?

Up to one hour per recording. The audio is held in your browser's memory while you record, so the tool stops and saves at one hour. Start a new recording to keep going.

Can I pause and resume a recording?

Yes. Pause stops the clock and the audio and Resume carries on in the same file. The pause is cut out, not recorded as silence.

Can I turn my recording into text?

Yes. Click Send to Audio to Text on any recording and the audio to text tool opens with it already loaded. It transcribes in your browser by default, up to 30 minutes.

Can I remove background noise from a recording?

Yes, afterwards. Download the recording and drop it into the audio noise remover, which reduces fan, hum and keyboard noise. Recording somewhere quiet and close to the microphone helps more than any filter.

Can it record my screen, a call or my computer's sound?

No. This records your microphone only. To capture your screen, use the screen recorder.

Why does it say my microphone is blocked or not found?

Blocked means you, or your browser settings, denied microphone access for this site: click the padlock next to the address, allow the microphone and try again. Not found means no input device is connected. If it says the microphone is in use, close other apps such as Zoom or Teams that may have it open.

Does the voice recorder work on my phone?

It is built to work on current Chrome for Android and Safari on iPhone, over HTTPS. Keep the screen on and the page open while you record, because a browser may pause a recording when you switch apps or lock the phone.
