What is Umami?

Umami is an open-source web analytics platform, licensed under MIT. It counts visitors, page views and events on your websites without cookies and without collecting personal data. It suits teams that want clear traffic numbers while keeping the data in a database they own.

What's in the Meetrix Umami AMI

Running Umami properly needs a PostgreSQL database, a reverse proxy and SSL. The AMI arrives with them set up.

How to set up a self-hosted Umami server

  1. Launch the stack

Subscribe on AWS Marketplace and launch the CloudFormation stack with your domain, an admin password and an S3 bucket for backups.

  2. Point your domain at it

After 5-10 minutes, create a DNS record with the PublicIp from the stack outputs.

  3. Sign in

Open the DashboardUrl and log in as admin with the AdminPassword you chose.

  4. Add your website

Click Add website, then copy its tracking code into the head of your site's pages.

Umami FAQ

What is Umami?

An open-source, privacy-focused web analytics platform. It shows visitors, page views, referrers and events for your websites, without cookies.

Is Umami free?

Yes. It is open source under the MIT licence. On AWS you pay for the instance and the Meetrix software fee shown on the listing, with no per-event limits.

Which instance size should I choose?

t3a.small handles small to medium sites. If you track several busy websites, choose a larger instance so the database has more memory.

How do I sign in?

Log in with the username admin and the AdminPassword you set when creating the CloudFormation stack.

Do I need a cookie banner for Umami?

Umami sets no cookies and collects no personal data, so many sites run it without one. What applies to you depends on your own privacy obligations.

Does it set up SSL?

Yes, automatically when your domain is hosted on Route 53. Otherwise, run the certificate script on the server as the developer guide shows.

How do I upgrade?

Back up your data, remove the old stack and launch the new version from AWS Marketplace.

How is Umami different from Google Analytics?

Umami is open source, sets no cookies and keeps every event in your own database for as long as you choose. Google Analytics is free but proprietary, uses cookies and stores the data in Google's cloud.
