# Self-hosted OpenHands AI coding agent on AWS and Google Cloud

Run OpenHands, the open-source platform for AI software development agents, from a pre-configured image in your own cloud account. Agents write and change code, run commands and open pull requests against your repositories, without your codebase leaving your infrastructure.

## What is OpenHands?

OpenHands, formerly OpenDevin, is an MIT-licensed platform for AI software development agents. Describe a task in plain language and an agent can plan the change, write and modify code, run shell commands, browse the web, call APIs and open a pull request, much like a human developer would.

- ### Writes and runs code

Agents edit files, run shell commands and test their changes.

- ### Git integrations

Connect GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket and get task suggestions from your repos.

- ### Sandboxed sessions

Each conversation runs in its own isolated container.

- ### Any LLM provider

Use the OpenHands provider or your own Anthropic, OpenAI or other API key.

- ### Not locked to one agent

Run Claude Code, Codex, Gemini or any Agent-Client Protocol agent too.

- ### Automations

Trigger work on a schedule or by webhook from Slack, GitHub or Linear.

## What's in the Meetrix OpenHands image

A self-managed OpenHands install means Docker, a reverse proxy, SSL and backups before the first agent runs. The marketplace image has those in place.

- OpenHands with Docker pre-installed for agent sandboxes
- nginx with an automatic Let's Encrypt certificate
- Daily backups to your own S3 bucket on AWS
- A certificate script for issuing SSL manually if needed
- A deployment template for your own AWS account or GCP project
- Email support from Meetrix at support@meetrix.io

## How to set up self-hosted OpenHands

1. ### Launch the server

Subscribe on AWS Marketplace or Google Cloud Marketplace, enter your domain and admin email, and deploy. The AWS stack is ready in about 5-10 minutes.

2. ### Point your domain at it

Create a DNS A record for your OpenHands domain with the server's public IP, so the certificate can be issued.

3. ### Configure an LLM provider

Open your domain. On first visit OpenHands asks you to choose a provider and model and paste in an API key.

4. ### Connect your repositories

Open Integrations and connect GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket, then start a conversation with a task.

## OpenHands FAQ

What is OpenHands?

OpenHands, formerly OpenDevin, is an open-source platform for AI software development agents. It can modify code, run shell commands, browse the web and call APIs, working through a task described in plain language.

Do I need my own LLM?

Yes. Choose the OpenHands hosted provider or paste in your own API key for Anthropic, OpenAI or another provider the first time you open the dashboard. The provider bills you directly.

How do I connect my repositories?

Open Integrations in the dashboard and connect GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket. OpenHands can then see your repositories and suggest tasks from them.

Is it safe to let an agent run commands?

Each conversation runs in its own isolated container, so file edits and shell commands stay inside that sandbox. The agent still needs real credentials to open a pull request or call an API, so scope those as you would for any automation.

Is there a default admin login?

No. OpenHands has no separate admin username or password; you open the dashboard at your domain and configure it from there.

Which machine size should I choose?

t3a.medium on AWS or e2-medium on Google Cloud to start. Choose a larger machine for several concurrent agent sessions or large codebases.

Is OpenHands finished software?

Not yet. The project carries a Beta tag in its own repository and is under active development, so expect it to keep changing.

Where does my code live?

On the server in your own AWS account or GCP project. Meetrix has no access to the running instance, your repositories or your LLM keys.
