## What is OpenClaw?

OpenClaw is an open-source, self-hosted AI assistant and automation gateway. It connects messaging apps to one agent runtime, so you reach the same assistant, with the same memory, from whichever app you have open. It is an assistant, not a security or compliance tool.

- ### One gateway, many channels

Telegram, Discord, WhatsApp, Slack, Signal and iMessage.

- ### Shared memory

The same assistant and context across every channel.

- ### Your model provider

Use your own Anthropic, OpenAI or other API key.

- ### Tools and skills

Let agents use tools and add skills from ClawHub.

- ### Web dashboard

Manage the agent from the browser.

- ### Authenticated gateway

Gateway authentication is required by default.

## What's in the Meetrix OpenClaw AMI

A manual install means Node.js, nginx, a systemd service and SSL. The AMI does all of it through a CloudFormation template.

- OpenClaw running as a systemd service behind nginx
- Dashboard login, API key and provider set at launch
- Automatic SSL when your domain is hosted on Route 53
- A certificate script for issuing SSL manually otherwise
- A CloudFormation template for your own AWS account
- Email support from Meetrix at aws@meetrix.io

## How to set up a self-hosted OpenClaw assistant

1. ### Launch the stack

Subscribe on AWS Marketplace and enter your domain, dashboard login, model provider and API key. Make sure the provider matches the key.

2. ### Point your domain at it

After 5-10 minutes, create a DNS record with the PublicIp from the stack outputs.

3. ### Sign in

Open the DashboardUrl and log in with the admin username and password you set.

4. ### Add a channel

Create a Telegram bot, paste its token into the configuration and wait for the service to restart.

## OpenClaw by Meetrix vs a manual install vs hosted AI assistants

| | OpenClaw by Meetrix | Manual OpenClaw install | Hosted AI assistant SaaS |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hosting | Your AWS account | Your own server | The vendor's cloud |
| Data control | Conversations and keys stay in your account | Yours, if configured correctly | Vendor stores your conversations |
| Setup time | Minutes | Hours | Instant |
| Model choice | Your own provider | Your own provider | Vendor's model |

Messages still pass through the model provider and channels you connect. [Read about OpenClaw on AWS →](https://meetrix.io/blogs/openclaw-aws-marketplace/)

## OpenClaw FAQ

What is OpenClaw?

An open-source, self-hosted AI assistant and automation gateway that connects messaging apps to one agent runtime.

Is OpenClaw a security or compliance product?

No. It does not scan infrastructure or produce compliance reports. It is an AI assistant.

Which AI providers can I use?

Any provider you have an API key for, such as Anthropic or OpenAI. You set the key and provider at launch.

Why do I get "Incorrect API key provided"?

The key is wrong or revoked, or the provider does not match the key. Remove the deployment and launch again with the right values.

Who can see my data?

Conversations, memory and API keys stay on your instance; Meetrix has no access. Messages still pass through your model provider and connected channels.

Is it secure by default?

Gateway authentication is required by default, but you should rotate the admin credentials, restrict agent tools and review skills before installing them.

Which instance size should I choose?

t3.large or larger.

How do I upgrade?

Back up your server data, remove the old stack and launch the new version from AWS Marketplace.
