## What is Listmonk?

Listmonk is an open-source, self-hosted newsletter and mailing list manager written in Go and backed by PostgreSQL. It covers the same ground as Mailchimp: subscriber lists, campaigns and tracking. The difference is that your subscriber data lives on your own server instead of a third party's platform.

- ### Lists and segmentation

Manage any number of lists and query subscribers to target campaigns.

- ### Campaign templates

Build reusable templates and send newsletters to one or many lists.

- ### Open and click tracking

See how each campaign performs from the Listmonk dashboard.

- ### Double opt-in

Confirm new subscribers and offer a public mailing list archive.

- ### REST API

Control lists, subscribers and campaigns programmatically.

- ### Bring your own SMTP

Send through Gmail, SES, Mailgun, Postmark or your own mail server.

## What's in the Meetrix Listmonk image

Listmonk is a single binary, but it still needs PostgreSQL, a reverse proxy and SSL before it is ready for real campaigns. The marketplace image comes up with all of it wired together.

- Listmonk with PostgreSQL configured and connected
- A Let's Encrypt certificate for your domain
- SMTP and "from" address set at launch on AWS
- Daily PostgreSQL backups pushed to your S3 bucket on AWS
- A deployment template for your own AWS account or GCP project
- Email support from Meetrix at support@meetrix.io

## How to set up a self-hosted Listmonk server

1. ### Launch the server

Subscribe on AWS Marketplace or Google Cloud Marketplace and deploy. On AWS, enter your domain, SMTP details and backup bucket; the stack is ready in about 5-10 minutes.

2. ### Give it a fixed address

Point a DNS A record at the server. On Google Cloud, reserve a static external IP first so the record keeps working after a restart.

3. ### Sign in and set the root URL

Open the dashboard, sign in or create the Super Admin account, then set the Root URL under Settings → General to your domain.

4. ### Connect SMTP and send

Add your SMTP provider under Settings → SMTP (Gmail works with an app password on port 465), send a test email, and start your first campaign.

## Listmonk by Meetrix vs Mailchimp vs Sendy

| | Listmonk by Meetrix | Mailchimp | Sendy |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hosting | Your AWS account or GCP project | Mailchimp's cloud | Your own server, licence required |
| Subscriber data | Never leaves your account | Held by Mailchimp | On your own infrastructure |
| Pricing model | Cloud compute only, no per-subscriber fee | Rises sharply with list size | One-time licence plus your SMTP costs |
| Data residency | Any region you choose | Mailchimp's data processing terms apply | Depends on where you host it |

With any self-hosted option, your SMTP provider bills separately for sending. [Read the full Listmonk on Google Cloud comparison →](https://meetrix.io/blogs/listmonk-newsletter-manager-gcp/)

## Listmonk FAQ

What is Listmonk?

Listmonk is an open-source, self-hosted newsletter and mailing list manager written in Go and backed by PostgreSQL. It handles subscriber lists, segmentation, campaign templates and open and click tracking on infrastructure you control.

How is Listmonk different from Mailchimp?

It does the same core jobs, but you run it yourself. Your subscriber data stays on your own server, and you pay for the server rather than a plan that grows with your list.

Do I need my own SMTP provider?

Yes. Listmonk hands campaigns to an SMTP server you configure, such as Gmail, Amazon SES, Mailgun, Postmark or your own mail server. That also means you control your sending reputation.

How do I connect Gmail as the SMTP server?

Turn on 2-Step Verification for the Google account and create an app password. In Listmonk, open Settings → SMTP and enter smtp.gmail.com, port 465, the LOGIN auth protocol, your Gmail address and the app password.

Do I need a static IP?

Yes, if you point a domain at the server. On Google Cloud an ephemeral IP can change when the VM restarts, which breaks your DNS record and certificate, so reserve a static address first.

Which machine size should I choose?

t3.medium or larger on AWS, and e2-medium (2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM) on Google Cloud. Scale up for heavy campaign volume or a very large subscriber base.

Is Listmonk free?

Listmonk is free and open source, with no per-subscriber licence. On AWS or Google Cloud you pay for the server, any Meetrix software fee shown on the marketplace listing, and your SMTP provider's sending costs.

How do I upgrade?

Launch a new instance with the newer image and migrate your data. Back up the PostgreSQL database before removing the old instance.
