## How to convert SRT to VTT

1.  Click **Open subtitle file** and choose your .srt file.
2.  Check the validation panel for anything worth fixing before you convert.
3.  Set the **Format** dropdown at the bottom to **VTT**.
4.  Click **Download** to save a .vtt file, or **Copy to clipboard** to paste it elsewhere.

## Common problems when converting SRT to VTT

-   **Not sure what actually differs:** the cues themselves don't change - only the header line, the timestamp separator (comma to period), and VTT's optional extras that this converter leaves out for a clean file.
-   **Accented characters look wrong after converting:** your source SRT is probably Windows-1252 or Latin-1. Use the Encoding dropdown to re-read it correctly before exporting - VTT output is always UTF-8.
-   **The SRT file won't load:** missing sequence numbers, blank cues and backwards timestamps are repaired automatically - check the import report for anything that couldn't be fixed automatically.

What actually changes between SRT and VTT?

The cue text and timing are identical. VTT adds a `WEBVTT` header line and uses a period before milliseconds instead of a comma; it also supports optional extras SRT has no equivalent for, like cue settings and basic styling, which this converter leaves out for a clean, simple VTT file.

Can I fix subtitle timing before converting?

Yes - this is a full editor, not just a format swap. Use Shift or Scale to fix sync issues, or edit any line directly, before you export to VTT.

Why do accented characters look wrong in my SRT file?

Older SRT files are frequently Windows-1252 or Latin-1, not UTF-8. Use the Encoding dropdown next to the file picker to re-read the file correctly - VTT is always exported as UTF-8.

Does this work on mobile phones?

Yes for opening a file and converting it. Timing edits are much easier with a keyboard, so we recommend desktop for detailed fixes.
